  13. INTRODUCTION
  14. This HyperCard stack is designed to simulate the interface of the
  15. Enterprise's computer screens while displaying information on all the
  16. episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It allows you to scan the
  17. episodes and read the detailed plot descriptions (courtesy of Timothy
  18. Lynch), read the Episode Notes (collected by Mark Holtz) check out the
  19. writers, directors, and guests, and store the information on your video
  20. tape collection (if you have one).
  21.      There are two other HyperCard stacks now available, one for the
  22. original Star Trek series (Kirk & Co.), and one for Deep Space Nine.
  23. All of these stacks have been designed to work together, so rush out
  24. and get all three. Simply place them all in the same folder and they
  25. will recognize each other.

  28. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  29. This stack can operate on any Apple Macintosh computer with at least
  30. 2.5 megs of RAM.

  33. SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
  34. This stack requires HyperCard 2.1 or higher and System 6.0.5 or higher
  35. to operate correctly.

  38. SPECIAL FEATURES
  39. The stack will always remember which show you were looking at last and
  40. open the stack to that show.
  41.  
  42. There is now an "Episode Notes" field that holds information about the
  43. actors in the show, plot lines altered or dropped, mistakes and inside
  44. jokes, and opinions (usually by me). There are also references to other
  45. episodes of Star Trek that are related. These are all linked by
  46. hypertext links. Simply click on any underlined episode name, one 
  47. followed by a number such as "Klingons in My Dryer" [#123], and the 
  48. stack will take you to that show's card. A button labelled "Old Links" 
  49. will show you a list of all the shows you have accessed using these 
  50. hypertext links.  These links operate between all three Star Trek 
  51. stacks as well, allowing you to follow references back to their origin.

  53. You can "mark" shows using the Mark Shows window. Once a group of shows
  54. are marked, you can print out various reports for these shows. For
  55. example, you could mark all the shows which feature Worf to find out if
  56. the same set of authors have been writing for him. You can view only the
  57. marked shows by using the "Marked" arrows on the screen. You can also go
  58. directly to any marked show by clicking on the title in the list.

  60. You can generate reports in three styles (Full, Short, and One Line)
  61. for all the shows, the marked shows, or just the one you are looking at.
  62. These reports can be sent to your printer or saved in a text file (flat
  63. ASCII). The creator of the files can set as well; you can select from
  64. MacWrite, MacWrite II, TeachText, Word, Word Perfect, or WriteNow. This
  65. is the default word-processor which will open if you double-click on the
  66. file's icon.

  68. You can print reports in large or small fonts. The large fonts are for
  69. people using ImageWriters, and the small fonts are for people with
  70. StyleWriters or LaserWriters.

  72. You can store information on your video tape collections of Star Trek
  73. episodes. You can then use the stack to find which tape a specific
  74. episode is on, so you need not physically search the tapes to find it.
  75. This information can be exported to a file, then imported into newer
  76. versions of this stack.

  78. You can add shows to the stack. Use the "New Card" menu item, or
  79. type Apple-N. The new cards will always be placed at the end of the
  80. stack. When you enter the name of the episode, that name will be updated
  81. in the title lists so you can view it with the "Go To" button. Make sure
  82. you spell the title of the show correctly, otherwise updating to the
  83. next version of the stack may have some problems.

  85. The Help Mode causes small windows to pop up next to objects when you
  86. place the cursor on them. If you are running System 7.0 or higher,
  87. turning on Help Mode will activate Balloon Help.

  89. You can use the FIND command to find any information in the stack, the
  90. by holding down the Option key and clicking on the FIND button, you can
  91. find the same string again.

  93. The GO TO button brings up an alphabetic list of all the episodes. By
  94. pressing a letter, you can move to that part of the list. You can also
  95. view the lists in seasonal order by pressing one of the "season #"
  96. buttons (1 to 7).

  99. UPDATING FROM VERSION 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2
  100. If you have entered information on your video collection into an 
  101. earlier version of the stack, you will want to transfer that information
  102. into version 2.0. Use the following steps to accomplish this:
  103.   1) Start the old version of the stack.
  104.   2) Select "Export Video Info…" from the menu.
  105.      This creates a file containing your video information.
  106.   3) Open version 2.0 of the stack.
  107.   4) Select "Import Video Info…" from the menu.
  108.   5) Open the file you created in step 2.
  109.      This will start the importing process. When it is done,
  110.      all of the video information from the original stack will
  111.      be a part of the new stack.
  112.   6) Make sure all of your video tape information transferred
  113.      correctly before you delete the old version of the stack.

  116. HOW TO GET UPDATES TO THIS STACK
  117. Updated version of this stack will be available by anonymous FTP from
  118. mac.archive.umich.edu (141.211.182.23) and sumex-aim.stanford.edu
  119. (36.44.0.6) as they are produced. Any new stacks will be announced in
  120. the following Usenet newsgroups: comp.sys.mac.hypercard,
  121. rec.arts.startrek.current, and rec.arts.startrek.info.
